The Opportunity

We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our Site Mason Apprenticeship Scheme. This is a hands-on role offering real project experience across a variety of building sites, combined with structured college-based learning throughout the year.

You will work alongside highly skilled and experienced stonemasons, developing specialist skills in a supportive and close-knit team environment.

Role Overview

The broad purpose of this apprenticeship is to:

  • Install natural stone across new builds & historic buildings.
  • Conserve, repair, or replace existing stonework
  • Contribute to building and landscape projects where stone is a key feature

Projects often include,

  • Bespoke stone installations such portico’s, facades, ashlar, cantilevered staircases, arches.
  • Interior stone installations such as kitchens and bathrooms
  • Landscaping elements such as fountains, memorials, and or paved areas.

Key Responsibilities

Learn to:

  • Set out and build structural stonemasonry including cantilevered staircases & portico’s.
  • Create moulds and templates for standard and bespoke stonemasonry components
  • Assist in conserving and restoring stone, brickwork, and heritage structures
  • Select, use, and maintain appropriate tools and equipment
  • Interpret work plans considering building age, listed status, and site conditions
  • Safely handle, transport, and position materials and tools
  • Install, erect, and repair masonry components
  • Support experienced masons with mortar mixing and general site tasks
  • Maintain a safe and organised working environment

CNC Machinist Apprenticeship – Job Description

The Opportunity

The role involves learning how to craft and programme perfectly accurate shaped stones from raw stone block for facades, staircases, portico’s and other architectural & heritage masonry projects. You will learn how to use advanced CNC 3-6 axis machinery to help deliver production in the most effective and efficient way, so showing initiative and practiveness is essential. The role is a mixture of cutting programming, stone selection, stone handling/placement, machine operations and general team communications to achieve end results to send to our in house site fixing team.

You will need a mixture of computer & practical skills to operate complex machinery.

Role Overview

  • Loading & unloading saws safely, using crane or forklift (training provided)
  • Planning work to ensure saws are working.
  • Programming CNC saws & 3-6 axis saws
  • Using Alphacam to programme machinery (training provided).
  • Reading and planning stonemasonry drawings on AutoCAD.
  • Washing down of CNC machines
  • Plant maintenance duties
  • Attending team/machinist meetings
  • Daily pre-operation checks on your specific machines
  • Illustrating you place value on Health and Safety by following policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive a forklift
  • Read technical drawings

Apprenticeships

Apprentices are the life soul of our industry. We have specialist knowledge from generations of experience, that must be learned and passed down.

Today’s apprentices are our next generation of craftsman that will keep the future legacy. For stonemasons to continue, investing in apprenticeships is essential not just for A F Jones as a company but for masonry as a whole.

Stonemasonry is as much a vocation as it is a trade. We are always looking for apprentices and applicants with that sense of purpose.

At least ten of our masons came to us as apprentices or was their first job early on in their careers and have subsequently been with us for many years.

Our Production Director came to us as his first job and has now been with us for 19 years and our Interiors Manager has been with us for 15 years, beginning his career here as a mason.

We offer a 2-year apprenticeship that is taught in house and at college whereby our students gain a level 2 NVQ diploma in Stonemasonry whilst working for us.
